Pelosi Deserves a Big Pay Cut

The “sequester” we’ve been hearing about, that will force federal budget cuts across most federal agencies, will also include cuts to Congressional compensation.

Perhaps having their own bottom line threatened will get them to pass a budget. Hopefully a reasonable one. (I’m not holding my breath.)

But Pelosi doesn’t think Congressional pay cuts should be part of the penalty. She believes pay cuts are beneath her “dignity”.

“I don’t think we should do it; I think we should respect the work we do,” said Pelosi. “I think it’s necessary for us to have the dignity of the job that we have rewarded.” [ref]

Unbelievable. And I’m not referring to Pelosi’s horrific grammar.

Forget pay cuts. Based on performance, most of Congress should be fired.

The economy is in the toilet, and has been for a long time — largely thanks to meddling politicians. It isn’t getting any better, primarily due to idiotic policies coming out of Washington. Millions of Americans are unemployed, underemployed, or taking pay cuts to stay employed.

Meanwhile, Pelosi’s Congressional seat earns her a base salary of $193,400 a year. She is eligible for government sponsored health and life insurance. Because she has been in Congress for over 25 years, and is over age 50 (she’ll be 73 this year), when she leaves Congress her annual pension will be 80% of the average of her three highest annual salaries (over $150,000). She’s also eligible for full Social Security benefits. [ref, ref]

The bottom line: Pelosi is way better off than 99% of Americans, yet her job performance is pathetically bad.

Dignity? What would be really dignified is for Pelosi and her fellow members of Congress to be paid what they are worth: A heckuva lot less than they are making now.
